A Great Story
In the beginning
Dec 2004 - I became involved in Chapel activities on
a Forward Operating Base in Iraq as a Civilian
Contractor.  It was there I met Chaplains Wilson and
Gazaway, two great men of God who cared for the
spiritual, mental and emotional needs of combat
soldiers on the front lines of the war on terror.
Spring 2005
In March 2005, I was hoping to start a study for New
Christians at Chapel, as I had done in the past at my
home church (
www.fellowshipchurch.com).  I asked
friends and family in the States to sponsor the NIV
Starting Point Study Bible for soldiers who might be
taking part.  Soon, Bibles began arriving daily for the
troops, and I began handing them out.
May 2005
After collecting a number of pictures with Soldiers and their Bibles, I forwarded an
email to Zondervan, relating to them how their study Bible was touching the lives of
American soldiers in Iraq.  A few days later, I received an email from the Executive
Editor of the study Bible.  He related to me how that when assembling the study notes
for the Bible, he and his team had prayed specifically that this Bible would make it into
the hands of soldiers going to war in Iraq.  This was the first indication that they're
prayer had been answered.  He wrote and distributed this article shortly thereafter:
(
Starting Point Study Bible Article).

Summer 2005
As word spread, the influx of study Bibles from Americans, Canadians and Australians
was amazing.  Soon, almost 300 had been donated and distributed.  Soldiers were
growing in their faith, and began telling other soldiers about their Savior.  Many were
believing, getting baptized and handing out Bibles to friends in their units.  It was truly
a blessed time to be a part of their lives.
Unfortunately, with war come casualties...

One of the first soldiers to receive a study Bible was
Nils Thompson.  He was among the most active
Chapel soldiers, and I had the privilege of knowing
him for five months before he was killed in action on
August 4, 2005.  To learn more about Nils, Click on
his picture to the right or on the tab at the top of the
page bearing his name.  Nils just two weeks prior
had asked for a second study Bible for one of his
friends who would be interested in reading it.  He
was very excited, as his friend had read most of the
Old Testament in just two days!  We were all
impressed with the way God was using Nils to
reach his fellow soldiers with his Word.

PFC Nils G. Thompson
In his honor and memory, Nils' family and closest lifelong friends have set up the Nils
G. Thompson Memorial Fund to honor him, with 100% of the proceeds going to
purchase study Bibles for US Troops.  The Bibles are purchased and sent to me in
Iraq.  Here I hand them out to soldiers myself, pass them along to Chaplains and
send them to other bases across Iraq who are asking for them.  For the address to
the memorial fund, please click on Nils' picture above.  So far, there have been two
shipments of study Bibles, totaling 232 study Bibles.

Also in August of 2005, Wheelchairs for Iraqi Kids was born, raising support from the
home-front for pediatric wheelchairs for disabled Iraqi children.  All totalled, 31 chairs
were delivered by air directly to our base, and delivered out by Stryker soldiers and
Medics to needy Iraqi kids.

In September, Chaplain Wilson and his unit left for the States.  They were replaced by
another Stryker unit, and I had the privilege of meeting and working with Chaplain
Herman Cheatham for a few months before I transferred to another base in
December.

As the study Bibles continue to arrive,  I have the priviledge of handing them out to
Apache, Blackhawk and Chinook crews first-hand.  Also, Chaplains in Baghdad asked
for over 300, and Chaplains across the country are now contacting me for more
Starting Point Study Bibles.
So far to date, over 3200 study Bibles have been
donated and distributed to soldiers across Iraq.

This year, my goal is to bring another 3000 study
Bibles into country
for the surge so every  soldier
of every nationality who might want one could
have one.

I will be looking to get the word out to churches
and organizations throughout the US, Canada, and
Australia through media outlets of all types.
